So. Grab a bag of biochar, a few seeds and...
Follow the simple steps below to establish a control plot and a biochar plot in your vegetable patch.Cover letter
Data Collection Sheet
Please note: We are tight on funding and we need your help. If you are able to contribute £5.00 for p&p, please fill in the form below and we will send you further instructions. If you are interested in funding the BBE, please contact cecile at oxfordbiochar dot com.

2. Set up a 1m by 1m control plot and one or several biochar plots.

ATTENTION! The variety of plant that you use, the time of sowing and the density of sowing must be exactly the same in both the control and biochar plots. However watering frequency, pest and weed control can be conducted as appropriate to the plant growth in each plot.

3. Apply and record a known amount of biochar or biochar & compost mix to the biochar plots (i.e. not the control plots).  Application rates should be at least 10% of the top 30 cm of soil, that is 1 kg of biochar for a 1m x 1m plot. However, this is a guideline and you can choose your application rate (research has shown that there is no maximum application rate). Please record exactly the type and volume of biochar you use in your biochar plot(s).

IMPORTANT: If you
decide to investigate a biochar & organic compost mix, you must apply the same type and amount of compose to the control plot, without the biochar. This ensures that any difference in crop yields between the plots is a result of the biochar alone.

4. Gather data at harvest.
Don't forget to take photos of your results.
Weigh the produce. Weigh above- and below-ground components separately.
NEW: please weigh stems and leaves separately (together, they are the above-ground components).
Record the following quantitative data: yields (kg/m2), date, and time of collection, & the following qualitative data: watering rates (on a scale of 1-5), weeding rates, soil condition, germination rates, plant survival, overall appearance of the crop.

Data Collection Sheet

Please read this cover letter & print the data collection sheet. We will need the data collection sheet by 30th November 2012 at the latest. If you already have results, please send them through to Dr. Cécile Girardin at Oxford University Centre for the Environment, School of Geography, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX 3QY, Unighted Kingdom. We just can't wait to start the analysis!
